Clearing sites and building out campuses
A large project can keep changing long after the first building opens. At UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland, a new support building is finished, while demolition is clearing space for the next hospital building. UCSF's October update puts that groundbreaking in spring 2027, with an opening planned for 2031. The work still ahead includes a seven-story hospital and changes around the existing campus.
In San Jose, Microsoft is building a data center in Alviso. HITT broke ground on the next phase in June 2026, following earlier site development. Preston Pipelines says it's handling underground utilities with HITT and Microsoft. The builder expects the data center to be finished in 2028.
Southern California has its own mix of building and site work. Anduril says construction is underway on its Long Beach campus. Farther inland, Chino has approved plans for the Dirac battery storage project, where the demolition applications describe removing buildings and pavement before grading the site. Across the wider California list, commercial and industrial projects sit alongside power, water, and public construction. Those jobs range from plans still working through permits to sites with a builder already at work.
Who to call
Contractors and the equipment they run
California Compaction, based in Lancaster, handles mass grading, roads, and underground utilities. Its work also includes preparing solar and battery storage sites, with trenching and backfill among its services. The company has excavators, dozers, and scrapers in its equipment records.
Around the Bay Area, McGuire and Hester handles excavation, pipelines, paving, and concrete. Preston Pipelines specializes in underground work, including water and sewer lines, storm drains, and excavation and shoring. Preston's confirmed role at Alviso gives you one example of that work on a specific job. The equipment records describe each company as a whole; they don't show which machines are assigned to a site.

There's a mix of proposed and underway work here. For example, Chino's approval allows the Dirac development to move forward, but building and other permits still have to follow. The job descriptions keep that distinction, and the stage labels are estimates rather than live reports from the site.

About the data on this page
New-build jobs include homes, commercial buildings and other new construction. Maintenance and renovation work aren't in these counts. The map shows jobs with coordinates, so it won't include every job in the list.
Some project records don't include permits. That doesn't mean the job has no permits. The stories also draw on owner, builder and public-agency updates. A story may discuss a development left out of the totals because its record is duplicated or incorrectly classified. Grouped markers on large maps keep a location from one of the jobs they represent, rather than showing every address separately.
Contractors are matched through offices or project activity in this market. Fleet details are company-wide equipment on file, not verified purchases or a count of machines at these sites. Public filings often arrive 30–90 days after the event. The refresh badge is the page's update date; individual dates appear in the tables.
